What it shows

Every screen, every minute

Nine pages, cycling once a minute, readable from across the kitchen. Swipe to flip through them, or let them roll.

Sugar-white sand. Emerald water.
Your morning beach check, already done.

Made for the counter

Glance. Know. Go.

Big and bright

A 10.1-inch screen with type sized for across the room. It dims itself at night.

Always current

Fresh tides, waves, weather and the beach flag all day. No app to open.

Your phone is the remote

Reorder the pages, turn them on or off, and change settings from your phone, anywhere.

Your bands first

Star your favorite acts and venues. They jump to the top of tonight's list.

Never miss a sunset

Sunset time and direction all day, and a heads-up 30 minutes before.

Updates itself

New features arrive overnight. If one ever misbehaves, it goes back on its own.

Beach day, decided.
The flag, the rain and the rip risk in one answer.

Set up

Up and running in four steps

About two minutes. All you need is your Wi-Fi password and your phone.

  1. 1

Stand it up and plug it in

Set the display in its stand and plug a USB-C phone charger into either port on the left side. Any charger rated 5 V / 2 A or more works.

  2. The Welcome screen with a Get started button
    2

    Join your Wi-Fi

Tap Get started, pick your network and type the password on the screen. The display remembers it.

  3. The Connect your phone screen with a six-digit code and a QR code
    3

Scan the code with your phone

Point your phone's camera at the QR code and tap the link. Or open the address on the screen and type the six digits.

  4. The Beach Life app on a phone, asking what to call the new display
    4

    Give it a name

Your phone asks what to call it. That's it: the display starts its cycle, and your phone can change its pages, favorites and settings.

How to

Make it yours

Favorites, pages and settings are in the Beach Life app on your phone. A few things work right on the display.

Star your bands, pin your venues

  1. Open the app and tap Events at the bottom. It lists today's shows on 30A.
  2. Tap the next to an act to star it, or the next to a venue to pin it. Tap it again to take it off.
  3. On the display, your picks move to the top of the Events page: a gold star before a starred act, a teal tag on a pinned venue, and the number of picks in the header.

Picks stay. Whenever that act or venue is on the calendar again, it's at the top. The app shows today's shows, so star a band on a day they're playing. To see all your picks, or take one off, tap Your picks. Up to 24 acts and 24 venues.

Choose your pages and their order

  1. In the app, tap Pages.
  2. Tap a page to show or hide it. Home always stays on.
  3. Hold the handle and drag a page up or down. The display shows them in that order.

The display catches up within 30 seconds. Two pages come and go on their own: a second Events page on busy nights, and the Moon view after sunset.

The app's Settings tab: screen cycle, brightness, night dimming, display off, sunset and touch

Settings, from your phone

Tap Settings in the app. Changes reach the display within 30 seconds.

Screen cycle
How long each page stays up: 1 minute, 5 minutes, or Off to stay on one page.
Brightness
Turn it down for a dark room. Night dimming drops it to 30% from sunset until first light.
Display off
A black screen overnight, midnight to 5 AM unless you change the hours. A tap wakes it for 60 seconds. Wake on alert turns it back on for weather alerts and a double red flag.
Sunset
Reminder: 30 or 60 minutes before sunset, the Sunset page starts counting down. Shown as: In cycle keeps the pages rolling; Takeover holds the countdown on screen, then the moon until dark.
Touch
How long a tap pauses the pages (60 seconds, 5 minutes or Off), and whether holding the screen opens Settings.
Display name
Rename it any time.

Right on the display

Swipe

Left for the next page, right to go back.

Tap

The pages pause for a minute and a button for every page appears along the bottom. Tap one to jump straight to it.

Hold 3 seconds

Opens Settings. So does the small circle in the bottom-right corner.

Settings on the display has the same switches as the app, plus Check data now, Connect a phone, nightly updates, and About with Reset to new.

Help

Questions

I changed my Wi-Fi

Turn the display off and on. If it can't find its saved network, it shows the network list so you can pick the new one.

It says offline

The display keeps showing the last data it had, with the time it was checked. Check that your Wi-Fi is up; it retries every 30 seconds and catches up by itself.

How do updates work?

New versions install themselves overnight, around 3 AM. If an update doesn't work, the display goes back to the version it had. You can turn nightly updates off in Settings. What changed in each version is in the release notes.

Connect another phone

On the display, tap the screen, then the gear, then Connect a phone. Each phone in the house can control the same display.

Two displays, one phone

Tap the display's name at the top of the app to switch between them. To add one, tap Add a display there and type the code from the new display.

What's the red bar at the top?

An alert from the National Weather Service for the South Walton beaches or the water off them, like a rip current statement. It shows when the alert ends and today's rip current risk, and goes away on its own.

What do the flag colors mean?

Green: low hazard. Yellow: medium hazard. Red: high hazard. Double red: water closed to the public. Purple: marine pests. The flag comes from the South Walton Fire District.

Passing it on

Settings, About, Reset to new erases the Wi-Fi, settings, favorites and phones, and the display starts at the Welcome screen.
